RHS “Edible” launch event, April 2013
‘Edible’ is the theme for 2013’s Britain in Bloom launch and we hope that groups will plant edible gardens in public spaces to help celebrate the launch of their activities and the start of the planting year.
The RHS offered all Bloom and It’s Your Neighbourhood groups registered with East Midlands in Bloom and other regions and nations in 2013 the chance to apply for a free seed pack containing a selection of herb and vegetable seeds for planting at their April launch event. Seeds included: chives, parsley, coriander, dill, garlic chives, sage, thyme, red frills mustard, edible flowers: nasturtiums and marigolds, radishes, carrots, fennel, spring onions, spinach. 1,000 groups nationwide, registered to receive these seeds.
East Midlands in Bloom Judges look forward to seeing how these seeds will be used imaginatively and effectively by those entrants who have received them, in our region, this summer.

Defra/ RHS sustainable-growing-media funding for Bloom and IYN groups
(also in the last issue of the RHS Grass Roots magazine which you will have received if you are an EMiB Bloom or IYN entrant).
All Bloom and It’s Your Neighbourhood groups based in England are eligible to apply for funding from Defra to increase their use of sustainable growing media.
Groups can apply for up to 10,000 to fund a one or two year project (starting in 2014) that increases the group’s use of peat-free or reduced-peat growing media.
For example, this might be:
- To purchase plants grown in sustainable growing media for a selection of town-centre/ peripheral displays, where plants grown in peat were usually used.
- To purchase peat-free growing media for propagating plants on-site by the group
- To trial peat-free / reduced-peat raised beds or hanging baskets for local community groups’ use
Funding is available to cover the additional costs of using plants grown in sustainable growing media, not the total cost of the activity.
To qualify, groups must be either local-authority led or working in partnership with the local authority (which is usually the district, county, city or borough council). However, applications are also welcome from groups working with parish or town councils (see guidance for further details).
